Opinion Piece- DKNY and HB’s

Looking at the broadcasts of Stardoll you can find out alot about our little community.  For instance most girls are looking for a hot boyfriend and everyone is making deals about how to give gifts.  But even more popular than these online dating ads and bargains is the constant hunt for DKNY and Hotbuys.

What is it about these fashion items that have girls buying and selling them for the maximum amount allowed, $60?  I suppose being rare is something and that is what I always thought- these teens are buying the clothes because they are limited in numbers.  But last week I thought diferently.  I was looking through the broadcasts to see who had good deals on cheap clothes, bargain shoping really.  I really disliked the whole DKNY and HB craze.  I clicked on a user and (once I found she had zero clothing worth looking at) I glanced at her Guestbook and saw an “ad” for cheap DKNY.  I remember laughing and clicking because I thought I knew that “cheap” would mean $59 instead of $60.  As I was chucking to myself and trying to guess the insane amount of stardollars I saw the most amazing thing- DKNY for $11!  It was a little patterned scarf but I didn’t care.  I wanted- no- I NEEDED that scarf.  This animal indict just kicked in and I brought everything I could afford at that little bazzar.  And unlike the other sales when I flipped through pages to check the deals and calulate what I could get without spending too too much, I was an animal- shopper, attacking my prey.  I brought everything I saw at first glance because of the thought of someone taking it away.  I brought and brought till I was out of money: Rares, Hotbuys, DKNY, random junk.  Anything and everything was MINE.  After all my cash was gone I became a proud mommy lioness.  I moved around my wardobe to show-off my battle winnings.  I even hooked my little 6th grade brother into checking out my new finds.

The next day I felted the sores, I looked in my wallet on Stardoll to find nothing, my hopes of clothing would be gone until the next Sunday when my allowance came in again.  Looking back on my experience I wonder- do we buy the clothes because they are pretty or because we like the feeling of having something everyone else wants?  Are we completing our own little circle of poverty on Stardoll (ex. Sally buys clothes because Annie wants them who buys clothes because Amy wants them who buys clothes because…).  Are there less people who find DKNY and Hotbuys the most beautiful and lovely clothes in the HISTORY of online clothes than we are led to believe? Or is it that rush that you get when you shop for “Must-Have-Items”?  Do you REALLY want that Donna Karen Black Bow Purse for $50?  Next time you buy a costly DKNY or Hotbuy ask yourself this :  Am I in it for the Hunt or the Kill?
